FREMONT — There are days left to register for the first special collection hosted by the Ottawa Sandusky Seneca Solid Waste District.

Thursday is the last day to register for the upcoming TV and Electronics collection. Collections are only for the residents of Ottawa, Sandusky, and Seneca county — including all residents of Bellevue and Fostoria.

With a rise in prices, some changes have been necessary to keep the district’s services fully operational. There will only be one collection for each of the special groups of items collected, but sites will still be provided in all three counties on the same date.

Many items formerly accepted at these collections have been changed. Registration will be mandatory for all collections with registration for electronics currently already open.

Registration for the remaining three collections will open June 1. Registration can be done online at RecycleOSS.org, or by calling 419-334-7222, Extension 0 and following the prompt provided.

If the resident does not register, they will be unable to participate in the collection. TVs and electronics will be the first collection this year for the district, and the only one happening this spring.

There will be no charges for flat panel LCD/LED or plasma TVs. However, there will be a $5 charge for glass tube televisions that are 24 inches or less and $10 for televisions that are 25 inches and larger.

Console, DLP, and projection screen TVs are not accepted in this collection. Television screens with broken screens are also not accepted for the safety of the collection volunteers.

The household hazardous waste collection and the appliance collection will fall on the same date, but registrations will need to be done separately. That is, if a resident wants to participate in both collections they should register for both.

The following items will no longer be accepted at the HHW collection: motor oil, lead acid batteries, gas cylinders, and nonregulated putties and adhesives. Used motor oil can be taken to any number of auto service stores in the area including, Walmart, O’Reilly’s, and Advance Auto Part, not to mention the many local auto service stores also in the area.

Similar auto service shops that sell lead acid batteries will also take the old batteries for proper disposal. Rechargeable batteries can be taken to your nearest Lowes Department store for recycling.

Alkaline batteries are nonhazardous and once dead can be disposed of  properly to be landfilled. Gas canisters and cylinders, including propane (accepted at the district’s appliance collections), helium, freon, isocyanates, CO2, O, MAPP gas, acetylene, argon, etc. are not going to be accepted at the HHW collection anymore. All of the remaining gases are accepted at Environmental Recycling Group and Rader Environmental.

There will be an appliance collection on the same date as the hazardous waste collection, but registration will be necessary for both collections if the resident wants to participate in both of them.

There will be a farm tire collection this summer that is only for farms operating in the district. Registration for the farm tire collection will be by phone registration only, calling the main office 419-334-7222 ext. 2. Farm tires will be charged $1/$10/$20 depending on the height of the tires being recycled. Farms should be prepared to know the total number and height of tires before calling the district to register for the collection.

Registration will be mandatory for all collections moving forward. Information specific to all of the district’s special collections can be found at RecycleOSS.org, or by calling 419-334-7222 and speaking to one of the staff members.
